Transitional Pastors Are For Much More Than Filling Vacancies

By Kent Shirley

Grand Junction- Little did I know in Nov. 2004 when I traveled to Casper, Wyo., to attend a transitional pastor workshop, how significant this training would become seven years later in the Grand Valley Baptist Association.

This workshop covered four days of extensive work led by former pastors and leaders who had served as transitional pastors in various churches across the Southern Baptist Convention. LifeWay has since passed the training responsibility to the various state conventions for oversight and continuation. Read more

Revitalization: Mark Hallock and Calvary Baptist Church of Englewood

By Tim St. John

Originally published in the Baptist Examiner

Revitalize, by definition, means “to impart new life or vigor to”. In 2009, Calvary Baptist Church in Englewood was in need of new life. This once thriving, nearly 60 year old church that used to average in the hundreds for attendance had dwindled to thirty. Demographics in the surrounding neighborhood had changed and the membership was aging. The church was close to needing life support and plenty of prayers to survive. God answered those prayers in the form of Casper, Wyoming native Mark Hallock.  Read more

Can I Deduct This: What Every Church Member Needs to Know About Contributions

ShareThis

By Doug Lohrey

Associate Executive Director/ CFO with the Colorado Baptist General Convention

Can I deduct the value of volunteer work I do for the church?

No, the value of volunteer work you do for the church can never be a contribution.

If I do some work around the church and get reimbursed for my labor and the items I purchased to complete the job, can I just ask them to add this amount to my contribution statement?

No, the church is not allowed to add this amount to your contribution statement, but they can cut you a check and then you give that money back to the church. It would be best to cash the church check and then write a personal check to the church, but you can just endorse the church check back over to the church. Read more
