The Old Testament and New Testament are replete with passages which state in no uncertain terms that the people of God have a responsibility to the poor, the needy, the worker, the immigrant, and to other vulnerable groups in society. Bottom line, God loves the broken, humble, and needy person. He is constantly lifting them up and he wants his children to be about this same business.
