LuAnn Turner, a member of Bear Valley Church in Lakewood, has become our CBGC State Consultant for multi-family housing ministry. We’re excited to have LuAnn assist in helping churches reach into their communities through such a vital ministry.
LuAnn and her husband left Wichita, Kansas and moved to Colorado in 1989 for her husband to attend graduate school at Colorado Christian University. Shortly after moving, LuAnn started working as a counselor in the Bear Valley Counseling Center. LuAnn and her family then became members of Bear Valley Church.
Around 10 years ago, God first called LuAnn to work with multi-family housing ministries. “I was in staff meeting,” LuAnn remembers. “We had a speaker come who was talking about ‘the piles of non-Christians’ that we all drive by each day. She described it as an unreached population group, and I knew immediately that God wanted me to expand our small group outreach into neighboring apartments.”
According to a report by the National Multi-Family Housing Council, 56% of U.S. residents live in multi-family housing (meaning housing with 2 or more units). In Denver (not including the entire metro area) apartments represent 32% of all housing available.
Bear Valley Church currently reaches out to assisted-living communities to lead Bible studies. They also provide kid’s clubs and community events in several apartments in the area. In one condo community Bear Valley’s multi-family ministry provides a church service and Sunday school along with extra activities such as homework night and a cooking class.
“We also host summer interns who continue and expand our outreach at these 6 communities in the summer,” said LuAnn.
LuAnn would love to hear from churches doing multi-housing/apartment ministry or from those interested in learning more about it. Contact LuAnn or 303-731-4632.Leave a reply →
